Metal Roll Formed Handles

Metal Roll Formed Handles produced by Johnson Bros. have been made from either Tubing or Custom Handles utilizing Profiles and Shapes. Handle Tubing is produced in a Lock Seam or Open Seam Style in telescoping and as a single tube. Names of these handles range from the single tube form such as Mop Handles, Broom Handles, Casket Handles and in 2 tube telescopic form such as: Paint Roller Handles, Extendable Handles, Extension Handles, Telescopic Handles, Telescoping Handles and more. A Custom Handle made from Profiles, Shapes and sometimes Special Shaped Tubing, can be used as Appliance Handles, Basket Handles, Machine Handles, Stainless Steel Handles, Lifting Handles, Pull Handles, Tool Box Handles and much more.

Handles made from Tubing may require very little or no tooling cost, as Johnson Bros. maintains a large quantity of open and existing sets of tooling for tubes such as Lock Seam, Open Seam and Split Seam Tubing. When more than one tube size is to fit inside another, chances of having existing tooling sets to use, becomes reduced. The most frequently requested Tubing Handle at Johnson Bros. is for a 1"O.D. Round Outer Tube in a Lock Seam Tube style with a smaller lock seam Inner Tube for telescoping. Thicknesses range from .014" thru .021" thick. Finishes range from metallic Tin Plated steel, White Painted steel, Galvanized steel and more. Other base metals of 430 Brite Stainless or Brite Polished Aluminum in .015-.012" thickness can also be used. 3/4" Outer Tubing and smaller lock seam inner tubing have also been requested. Lock Seam Tubing provides No Twist feature for a Telescopic Handle when the inner tubing is also made from a smaller lock seam tube with a channel to clear the outer tube seam formed into it.

Telescoping Handles & Tubing

For a more customized Telescoping Handle with a need for lower die costs the customer must bear, the Inner Tube may be made as an Open Seam style tube.

Finishes for Inner Tubes of an Extendable Handle, are typically kept as a duller or darker metallic finish that will hide the rub marks caused by the in and out sliding action. The Inner Tube may be made from Tin Plate or galvanized to hide rub marks. However, there are plastic fixtures that can be assembled to the entry side where the inner tube goes into the outer tube to help prevent scratches with inner tube movement. The plastic fixture may be tightened or loosened to affix the inner tube where the consumer likes it to be. Another less expensive option would be to place a snap lock stamping inside the inner tube that can be depressed until it reaches a hole placed in the outer tube to make it the total length needed. Split Seam and Open Seam Tube telescoping handles may use a small stamped ring that fits where the tubes slide together to reduce rub marks as a lower cost option.

Open Seam and Split Seam Tubing for Handles

Open Seam and Split Seam may also be used to make a handle as just one tube, that doesn’t telescope. Many times you can see a split seam or open seam tube attached between two end brackets to form a shorter handle for containers and machinery. These styled handles can be made of Prefinished material pressed and locked to the end brackets or as a post finished handle after assembly.

Our Lock Seam, Open Seam or Split Seam Tubing is not meant to be bent. If Handle Tubing needs to be bent, at best, all you can get is a very large gradual radius or sweep.

Handle Pre-Finishes

Handles we manufacture can be manufactured from Pre-Finishes such as: Prepainted, Preplated, Galvanized, Aluminized, Preanodized, Prepolished, Prelaminated Vinyl and more. Base Raw materials can be: Steel, Stainless, Aluminum, Brass, Bronze, Copper, Clad, Embossed, Perforated, Alloys, and more. In some cases you may find a handle we can produce that will have a polished stainless profile used as a cladding to slide firmly over an aluminum handle base such as print #226-Z below. With low volumes, access to prefinished metals may be difficult to obtain. In those cases Post Finishing may be provided or you may decide to use a prefinished metal that isn`t hard to obtain with prefinishing such as Tin Plate, Galvanized, Aluminized, etc.

Inline Fabrication can be provided to the Roll Formed Handles, such as: Holes, Slots, End Fabricating, Swaged Ends, Cut-to-length, Radiused Ends, Dimple Free Ends, Shear Forms, Ring Bending, Notches and more. Secondary operations and special assemblies can also be provided such as plastic connectors or snap locks as mentioned previously.
